Haaaave You Met...WT: Halloween....boo!

With exception to the time I was Super Mario with my roommate, Thomas, being Luigi, I had the best Halloween in Hong Kong. Prior to Halloween, for the first time, I actually went out with friends to shop for costumes. There was an actual street in Central that sold costumes for relatively cheap prices. For some reason, when we chose our costumes, we all ended up as superheroes. Here’s the breakdown of the guy costumes:

Josh- Incredible Hulk
Tony- Superman
NY Jack- Spiderman
Cliff- Black Spiderman
Baller Jack- Spartan
Ray- as himself
Me- Wong Fei Hung aka Master Wong

Just in case you don’t know who Wong Fei Hung is, let me explain. Master Wong is a Chinese Folk Hero, Medicine Man, and a Martial Arts Master. I grew up watching him, starring Jet Li, and since I was in China, it was my privilege to become him for one night.

Anyways, these were the girls' costumes:

Thao- Bee
Carol- Bear
Anna- Nurse
Connie- School girl

The pre-Halloween night bash at Wei Lun Hall was really funny. NY Jack, Tony, and I got ready first so we were fighting around in the hall with our characters. Later we went downstairs to 7-11 to get some food and ALL THESE people outside the dorms wanted to take pictures with Spiderman and Superman. They were superstars and I knew they enjoyed the spotlight. It was pretty funny actually, all the locals were screaming their names. Later when Cliff and Josh came back from working out and family dinner respectively, that’s when I couldn’t stop laughing. NY Jack did not know that Cliff bought the Black Spiderman (Venom) costume so when they first saw each other, it was a shock for Jack. I couldn’t stop laughing. Then they started to fight. Good vs Bad! Cheers!

We decided to go to Lan Kwai Fong where it is said to be crazy during Halloween. To my surprise, not that many people were dressed up. Here and there I would see a crazy costume like men dressing as ladies in dresses. To be honest, I must say that we were the main attractions. The superhero costumes were the center of attention as many people wanted to take pictures with us. The funny thing was that you could do anything to them and they would go along with it. Cliff, since he was in the Spiderman mask, decided to fake choke everyone in his pictures and everyone played along with various facial expressions. He could get away with it since no one could see his face. Everyone out was there to have a good time. It was a very different atmosphere than in Western societies.

After, we went to Sugar, a bar/night club. I had to negotiate with one of the promoters for a group discount and in the end, we got 2 free tickets which lowered everyone’s price. Halloween, everyone’s happy = a good night! It was a great experience to spend Halloween in HK. We must all reunite next Halloween!
