First Day of School

Today was the first day of school; my second year of teaching at Edison Middle School. It was a bit overwhelming for me to start school this soon after coming back from the Arctic the night before. Nonetheless, I am glad I still have a job in the midst of the LAUSD crisis.

What can I say about the first day of school?

- 3 periods of 7th graders, 3 periods of 8th graders
- No longer an AVID teacher; all my previous AVID students no longer have AVID, which is depressing. "I want AVID" a student told me.
- The students were well-behaved and quiet throughout the day so that was great!
- My 6th period class...what can I say. Just picture all my low achieving students from my previous year all placed into one class, mixed with low achieving students from the other science teacher. It's going to be tough...
- My 7th period class consists of students that I previously had. I didn't need to tone set at all, it was awesome! I'm excited to work with this class since all the students know how I work and how I teach my classes. When I asked them what they learned in 7th grade, they started listing off vocabulary words. When I asked other students from my other classes what they learned in 7th grade science, they either didn't answer or said nothing. "You made science fun for us" one of my previous student told me. Teaching is worthwhile!

Here we go, year 2! I hope I still have a life though...

Out...
